Photoshop Basics

Here are some basics of the most used functions, where there are others here are just some of the ones I used the most.

Making a new layer

Unsure of how to do this? No problem its very simple and there are also several ways to make a new layer.
1. Through the top menu go to Layer which is next to image, From there go to New and then click the very first choice which is labeled as layer.... A new window will pop up, its ok, just press ok and your new layer will come up. Recap Layer>New>Layer...
2. Through the keyboard Hit the following buttons together Shift + Ctrl + N (only hit whats in BOLD the + is for you to see that those buttons are to be pressed at the same time.) When your new window pops up, Hit ok.
3. through the layers tab (if your layers tab/window is not open please hit F7 to open it) Click on the following button and there you go.

Adding a layer style

These apply to both images, shapes, text and much more, its an added extra to your layers. If you would like to see examples of layer styles please click here
You can add a layer style by click on the layer you want it on and then clicking the little F on the layers tab/window. It looks like this By clicking that little F you can pick which layerstyle you want. Another way to open up the layer style window is by double clicking the layer it self (just don't double click the words)

How to change a layer name

You can change a layer's name by double clicking the name, when the name turns highlighted hit the backspace and rename it into whatever you want.

Delete a layer, or Layer Effects

You can remove both a layer and its effects by just dragging the layer (remember to click and hold) and drag it to the little trash can at the very bottom of the layers tab/window. It looks like this . To remove just the effects instead of clicking on the layer just click on the effects which is right under the layer, click and drag that to the trash can.

How to make patterns and Brushes

While i can't really teach you how to make them from scratch i can show you how to turn any image into a brush or pattern. So lets say you downloaded an image pack from some site, you opened the zip/rar file and opened all the images or image into photoshop. Crop the section you want via this tool and go to Edit on the top menu and then go to define brush present, a pop up will show up with a preview of your brush and a generated name, you can change the name to whatever you want to name it.
the same applies for a pattern, but instead of cropping the image just keep it as is and go to Edit on the top menu and then go to define pattern a different pop-up will come up and a preview of your pattern will show and a generated name which you can change to whatever you please.
