Managing your own content.

Misc Advice

Just like my previous tutorial in managing your downloaded content, what about your own? is your pictures, music and documents folder one hot mess? are you sharing the computer with more then one person and files are all over the place? then heres a tip in organizing those messy folders and making things easier for you and your other computer occupants.

Now lets say that more than one person uses your current computer, and files are all over the place. How are you going to fix this clutter?
Easy, go to your desktop and create folders for the people who use your computer. Now your probably saying why the hell am I stuck having to clean this up for them? well you don't want your computer to stay a mess forever don't you? if its been a mess for so long who else is going to clean it?... Now back to the folders.
Lets say 3 people use this computer heres how I would do this.

Now that you got the folders, time to pick someone's folder to start with. Lets start with your folder, now open the folder and open then pick a main folder to start with. You can start with Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos or whatever folders are used the most. for the sake of not confusing my readers with vague folder references we will start with the Documents folder.
Now I'm pretty sure you got Word documents, notepad documents or other document related files with in this folder that belong to YOU. I advise you start sorting through your own documents and move them into the "ME (whatever name you used)" folder on the desktop.
if it confuses you heres a picture of me moving my essay file into my folder on the desktop.

In my folder

(you can't take a screenshot moving a file...)

Now continue to do that to all your files within the Documents folder. Done? now move that Me folder inside the Documents folder. We will repeat this process for all the main folders. If you Feel that this is too much your welcome to make sub folders within your personal folders for pictures, videos and much which you can keep on the desktop. If not you can repeat the process and make a 'Me' folder in the music folder, pictures folder Documents folder, etc. to avoid file mix up with in the folders.
By making your very own personal folder your free to add whatever you like and no one else will think that the files theirs because they will have their own personal folder.

But what if only I own the computer yet my files are still every where? what then?
Then we will work folder by folder organizing the content within the main folders. We will again start with the documents folder. Student? then make sure you have a folder name School, and within that folder sub-folders with titles like essays, projects, take home tests, homework, misc... and so on. got other documents in there? or even your website files? then make folders for them so you have a documents folder with nothing but folders for your files. Now that clutter of files are in folders and theres no long scrollbar of miscellaneous files.

Now you can repeat the process within the music and Pictures folder with names like Korn then within that the albums or just the plain music files from that band, and for the pictures you can folder them by events, people, your own pictures, Photo-shopped images, or graphics from other sites as long as the folder isn't cluttered with so many files.

Hope this helps.
